"Youth Digital Futures" (Kenya, 2024): Unleashing Kenya’s Next Generation

    About the Project

The "Youth Digital Futures" project, launched in 2024 by Horn of Africa Communication for Development Ltd, was an innovative initiative to empower Kenyan youth with digital skills for a tech-driven future. Operating in Nairobi and rural Rift Valley with a $300,000 budget, this year-long program targeted young Kenyans aged 18-25 to bridge the digital skills gap, fostering entrepreneurship, education, and employment opportunities. By combining training, awareness campaigns, and mentorship, the project positioned Kenya’s youth as leaders in the region’s digital economy.

Commissioned by the Kenya Ministry of ICT, with support from partners Youth Empowerment Network (YEN), TechEd Africa, and Pulse Analytics, this initiative leveraged a $300,000 budget to drive youth development and innovation in the Horn of Africa.

    Project Objective

The primary objective of "Youth Digital Futures" was to train 250 Kenyan youth in digital skills (e.g., coding, digital marketing), enable 60% of trainees to start digital projects or secure jobs within six months, and reach 80,000 community members with digital awareness messages, all within a $300,000 budget. The project aimed to equip Kenya’s next generation with tools for economic and social impact.

    Services We Provide

"Youth Digital Futures" was executed in three strategic phases, optimizing the $300,000 budget:

    1. Digital Skills Training ($130,000): TechEd Africa delivered 12 workshops in Nairobi and Rift Valley, training 250 youth in coding, digital marketing, and app development. Costs covered trainers, laptops, and internet access points.
    2. Awareness Campaign ($90,000): The "Future Is Digital" campaign, refined by Pulse Analytics’ targeting, used radio, social media, and youth forums to reach 100,000 people. YEN supported community events, with funds for airtime and materials.
    3. Mentorship and Placement ($80,000): The Kenya Ministry of ICT coordinated six months of mentorship with tech firms and job fairs. The budget funded mentors, stipends, and a digital platform linking trainees to opportunities.
